Ledger Live: Beginner's Security Guide

Step-by-step instructions to safely set up, log in, and manage your Ledger hardware wallet.

Getting Started

Ledger Live is the official app to manage your Ledger device. Follow these steps to set up, secure, and use your wallet safely.

1. Download Official App

Only download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website. Verify the website URL and, if possible, check the software’s signature or checksum to ensure authenticity.

Tip: This prevents counterfeit or tampered software from compromising your device.

2. Install & Launch

Follow your platform’s prompts to install. macOS users may need to allow installation in security settings. Linux users should ensure proper USB access. Launch the app and choose to initialize or restore your device.

Always enter recovery phrases on the device only — never on the computer.

3. Connect Your Device

Use the supplied cable, connect directly, and unlock using your PIN. Never provide your recovery phrase to Ledger Live or any other app.

Warning: If any app asks for your recovery phrase outside device restore, stop immediately — it’s a scam.

4. On-Device Verification

Always verify addresses, amounts, and fees on your device screen before approving any transaction. Your device display is the final authority.

Important: Cancel immediately if the details differ from the app.

5. PIN & Passphrase

Choose a strong, memorable PIN. Optional passphrases create hidden wallets — losing them means permanent loss of access.

6. Backup Recovery Phrase

Record your 12/24-word recovery phrase offline using the provided card or durable material. Keep backups in secure, separate locations.

Never store recovery words digitally.

7. Test Transactions

Before sending large amounts, always do small test transactions to validate addresses and fees.

Final Steps Before Transactions

  1. Verify installer and Ledger Live updates.
  2. Connect device & unlock with PIN.
  3. Ensure recovery phrase is securely stored.
  4. Check addresses & transaction details on device.
  5. Conduct test transactions if necessary.
